Are You Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene?
One of the best ways to promote good long-term dental health is to start examinations and care at an early age. At Perrott Dentistry, we can learn more about a person’s dental health the earlier we start seeing them, so we can properly examine their primary teeth.
Along with your regular at-home oral care routine, you should also be scheduling your dental check-ups and professional teeth cleanings twice-a-year. Dr. Perrott and our team can implement proper oral hygiene habits at a young age for you and your children to ensure a healthy smile for years to come.
Maintaining a good dental hygiene routine, seeing Dr. Perrott for your biannual check-ups, and keeping up with a healthy, well-balanced diet are all important factors in attaining a beautiful smile.
Visiting Perrott Dentistry for Your Dental Hygiene Appointments
At each dental hygiene visit, whether it’s for you or your little one, we’ll begin by examining your teeth and gums for any noticeable infections, decay, or any other issues. When necessary, usually every six months or so, we’ll also take a dental x-ray to check for any underlying problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye.
Depending on your medical and family history, we may also perform an oral cancer screening that can help us identify any abnormal lesions or sores. In the case that we find anything, we’ll further examine your mouth and perform any necessary treatments.
After Your Oral Exam
Once we’ve completed your oral examination, we’ll provide you with a complete, professional tooth cleaning. During your cleaning, our dental hygienist will:
- Remove any plaque or tartar from your gum line and between your teeth with a scaling tool.
- Once your mouth is tartar-free, we’ll use a high-powered electric toothbrush to deep clean each tooth and remove any plaque that may have been left behind.
- Next, we’ll floss your teeth to reach deep areas between them and see if you have any irritated areas that make your gums bleed.
- To complete your cleaning process, you’ll simply rinse your mouth out to remove any extra debris. Sometimes, we’ll provide you with a fluoride treatment, which helps mineralize your tooth enamel, making them stronger and more resistant to cavities.
Sealants for Children
It’s common for children to not always keep up with good dental hygiene, which increases their risk of cavities and infection. Along with a fluoride treatment during their regular visits with us, we may also suggest a very effective, yet underutilized preventive procedure for your child– dental sealants.
The application of sealants is a very simple, non-invasive procedure that seals out any potential decay. When we have to place a filling because of decay, we use either our quiet electric headpieces or a laser to make it as calming and easy for your child as possible.
Naturally, the earlier we detect the problem, the less invasive the restorative therapy. With the use of metal-free white fillings, we make the restoration match the original tooth color, which helps encourage kids to take better care of them.
