Front Crown (Cap) off
If enough tooth structure is visible and you can easily place the crown back onto your natural tooth, try temporary dental cement in the dental section of the pharmacy or Fixodent denture adhesive paste. Avoid chewing on it until you have it recemented by a dentist.
Lost filling or chipped back tooth
Orthodontic wax can be placed against the sharp area to relieve irritation to the tongue or cheek. It can also be placed into the “hole” created by a lost filling to keep food out. Temporary filling material can also be used. Both orthodontic wax and temporary filling material can be found in the dental section of the pharmacy. Follow up by seeing a dentist as soon as possible.
Front baby tooth knocked out
Baby teeth are not normally re-implanted. If you are sure it is a baby tooth, do not re-implant it into the tooth socket. If you are not sure, place it in milk and seek immediate care at either a dental office or emergency room.
Permanent front tooth completely knocked out
Retrieve the tooth and either keep in milk or in the mouth and go directly to a dental office or emergency room to have the tooth re-implanted. Try not to handle the tooth by the root or let the tooth dry out. Place gauze over the site where the tooth came out of to stop bleeding.
Oral ulcers
Apathous ulcers can be very painful sores in the oral cavity. When they develop, refrain from acidic and spicy foods or drinks (I.e. Orange juice and tomato sauce). Gentle rinsing with warm salt water helps promote healing. Do not use any alcohol containing rinse. They dehydrate the sores and actually retard healing. To ease the pain a 50/50 mix of Benadryl cough syrup and Phillips milk of Magnesium can be used as a rinse. Do not swallow the mix or give it to children. Do not use if you have any allergies to either of these products. Our office offers a laser treatment that will immediately kill the pain of these ulcers.
